The Tempest (Design Concept)
Written by William Shakespeare
Conceptual Design
How do men seek out power over and validation from other men?
My designs for Shakespeare’s The Tempest have an emphasis on the play’s portrayal of masculinity and its many forms. In many stories from this time period, the overly vain woman was a common archetype, but Miranda, the only central female character of The Tempest, is one of the least vain. The men are much more interested in how they are perceived by others and the appearance and status of those they surround themselves with. This urge to be accepted and respected often verges on the obsessive and homoerotic.
